This presentation will cover some of the most exciting findings of the Belgica 1898-1899 expedition, using illustrations gathered from many of the publications, plus reinterpretations of some of the results. Also, an attempt will be made at explaining why the science has been forgotten thus far. As the Subantarctic Peninsula region is now known to be enduring one of the most rapid changes anywhere on the Planet due to the Greenhouse Effect, the importance and relevance of the scientific observations made close to 120 years ago by the Belgica expedition will be discussed, and how we could use some of those results to better monitor environmental change.

De lezing is toegankelijk voor iedereen en bedoeld voor een breed publiek (collega's, geologen en niet-geologen, personeelsleden, studenten, alumni, familie en vrienden, jong en oud). Na de lezing wordt een receptie aangeboden om de discussie verder te zetten.
